2. Program description:

Configure Agent:
If you start Agent first time, you will see a window "Agent Setup"
in front of the window of Agent. Now you must fill in the fields "News (NNTP) Server" (that's the name of the server you want to get the newsgroups, for example: news.uncensored-news.com) and the field "Mail (SMTP) Server" (that is the name of the sever you can send your mails, for example: mail.gmx.net). If you do not fill in this fields, Agent will not work. Of course you can make modification later. You can fill in the field "Email address" too, but you need not. Now you can press "OK".
Now you see a window
Agent want to go online and get a list of newsgroups. Here press first "NO", because you need to configure Agent first.
In the Menue bar go to "Options", select "User and System Profile"
, it opens a window, select the tab "Dial-Up". Click into the small field "Open dial-up connection before going online", so it is activated. In the dropdown menue "Connection" select that connection, you want, Agent can go online .
I recommend to deactivate "Prompt before disconnecting", so Agent can close the connection automatic, if he ended his work.
Now select the tab "User"
.
If you want to get Newsgroups from a commercial newsserver, activate "Login with a username and password", delete "Gast" and type in your username. If you do not want to type your password if Agent connect to the newsserver, you need to activate "Remember Password between sessions", and fill in your password. Now press "OK".

Download newsgroups list:
In the menue bar go to "Online" and select "Refresh Groups List..."
.
In the window you see now
, you can press "Ok", because till now there are no groups. Now Agent downloads a list of the groups. That needs some time. In the left lower corner of Agent-window you can see, how far Agent is . Do not wonder that Agent will not go offline directly after he got all groups. The default value is 300 seconds after no activity.

Subscription of newsgroups:
You can search manual for those newsgroups, you are interested, but there is an easier way. Click into the window where you see the newsgroups, so the window is active. Go to Menue "Edit" and select "Find..."
. A window opens and you can type in the name of the newsgroup. But you can type in also only one word. For example you want to see all groups with the word gay in the group name. Type "gay" or in to the field, press "Find First". Now you can see the first group, to see the next group press "F3". So continue till you find a group, which is interesting for you. Click with right mouse button onto the name of the group, select "subscribe" , (if you want to unsubscribe any time, it is the same way, then click again onto "subscribe"). Continue with searching for groups, and subscribe all groups which are intersting for you. Now click onto "All Groups" at the top of that window , then you see only the subscribed groups.

Downloading message headers:
To get the Headers in the groups go in the Menue to "Online" and select "Get New Headers in Subscribed Groups" (if you want to get Headers in all your subscribed groups), or select "Get New Headers in Selected Groups" (if you want only get headers in the groups, you have marked in the groups-window)
. You can also click on the first icon (for all groups) from left side in the Toolbar, or second icon (for selected groups) , this way is little bit easier.
If Agent got all headers, you can see them in the right upper window. Left site of the message header you will see sometimes this icon , that means there are responses to that message. To see the responses, click into the icon. To see all message headers, also all responses, click onto "Thread"
at the top of the window. You can sort the message headers by "Subject", "Autor" or "Date" with a click onto buttons at the top of the window.

Downloding messages:
To receive any message make a double-click onto the Header of that message. The message you can see then in the lower window. There you can also see, if there is an attachment. To open the attachment make a double-click onto, click onto the button "Launch" of the window which you see then
. You can also open an attachment with a click onto the third icon from right side of the toolbar . But you need not to read news online, you can read them too offline. To mark messages, you want Agent shall download later on one time, click onto that message so it is marked, then click onto the 7th icon from right side of the toolbar . Now you see this icon left side of the message. Continue marking messages which you want receive in all groups. Of course you can select several messages to mark them on one time, it is the same way like in any other Win98 application. To receive the marked messages, click onto the third icon from left side of the toolbar . For better reading of messages, i recommend to activate "Word Wrap", then you need not to scroll right side, if there is a message with long text written without word wrap. To activate "word wrap" go in the menue bar to "Message" and select "Word Wrap" .

Meaning of some things:
The header of messages, which are unread, are red coloured, those are read black coloured. If you want to see only unread message headers, or all message headers, click onto button right side of "bincolars"
, and make your selection in the window which is open then .

If you have downloaded messages, you will see left side of the message headers some icons.

The meaning is:
= Usenet message with plain text
= Usenet message with attachments
= Usenet message for which all attachments have been saved
= Usenet message is no longer available
= Incomplete usenet message (incomplete multipart message)

Saving attachments:
To save attachements click with your right mouse button into the message header, and select "Save All Attachments"
. This saves all attachments of the selected message. Of course you can select more than one message header, then Agent saves all attachments of all selected messages at one time. The saved attachments you will find in the folder of Agent.

Saving attachments automatically (configuration):
You can save attachments also automatic, and also in different folder for each newsgroup. Go in the menue bar to "Group" and select "Default Properties"
. In the window you see now, select the tab "Receive Files" and activate "Save attachments automatically" . press "OK". If you want to save attachments in an other folder than the Agent folder, make a new folder on your hard disk, go again "Group" > "Default Properties", but now select tab "Directory" . Click onto the button "Browse". In the window you see now make always a double click on that folder, you want to open, or you want to see the folder tree. You can change the drive with the dropdown menue below the folder-window. If you have found and opend the folder you want to save the attachments, press "OK". Click also "OK" on the window "Default Properties for All Groups".
If you want to save attachments for any, or each group in an other folder, make this folders on your hard drive. Then select the group in the window, which shows the group names, for which you want to change the default properties. Then go in the menue bar to "Group" select "Properties"
, select the tab "Directory" and activate "Override default settings" . Click onto button "Browse" to select the right folder, then click onto "OK". Continue in this way with all other groups you want to change the default properties.

Multipart messages:
If you download multipart messages, which looks like that
, you need to join them manual. First you need to mark them all. (select first header, press "Shift" and keep it down while you select last header), or (click with left mouse button on first header, keep mouse button down while you move your mouse arrow downwards till you reach last header), or if header not in a row (press "Strg" and kepp it down while you select with your mouse all other headers). Then go in the menue bar to "Message" and select "Join Sections..." . In the window now opens, check if the sequence correct . If not, select one header and move it with the "Up" and "Down" buttons right side, till it is at the correct place. Continue till all headers are in the correct sequence. Then press "Join" button.

If you download multipart message, which looks like that
, you need an other program to join the parts. (Have a look to "Pictures/Movies-Split and Join large files on my Homepage)

Multiple Users and Servers:
You can configure Agent only for one newsserver an one e-mailbox. If you have more e-mailboxes and want to use Agent for several newsservers, create a folder for each Agent you need, with different folder names. Copy the files "agent.exe", "agent.hlp", "*.cod", "main*.clx", and "main*.tlx" from the Agent folder, where Agent is installed, into each of the other folders (the "*" means, there are different names). Now create shortcuts in the Start/Program menue or on your desktop which are linked to corresponding "agent.exe", so you can open all your Agents easy. Now you can configure each Agent how you need it.

Tip:
After installation of Agent, do not use that Agent. Create as many other Agent folder you need for use, but do not place them onto your boot-partition (normaly "C:\"). Place them all onto an other partition. The reason: All datas each Agent stores in his own folder. If you have to make a new installation of your boot-partition, you will lose only the emty Agent, all your other Agents are save on an other drive. If you have finished the new installation, you only need to install an Agent, and all other Agents will work excellent again. You will see, you save much work.

If you want to download all marked messages automatically, have a look to "Computer/Automatize Your Programs" on my Homepage.
